Karpathy ditched YouTube for a custom clone built on Hacker News recommendations. He used Opus 5.5 to process comments, filtering spam to find 6,454 videos across 150 topics from 2007 to 2026. The whole build took about two hours. He handled the API keys and VPS setup, but Claude did the heavy lifting. It is a smarter alternative to the current recommendation engine.
